How do you measure the success of a program whose purpose was to inspire young people to think creatively?
How can you possibly quantify the effect of unlocking the potential of developing minds, giving them the raw tools to go forth and make the world better, more beautiful, more open to possibilities?
The The Living Arts Center documentary attempts to answer these questions through following the paths of those directly influenced by their experience and seeing the obvious and often compelling ripples within society that The Living Arts Center experiment set into motion.
The Program
The Living Arts Center, a ten-year program open to elementary and high school students in Dayton area schools, was born amidst all the turmoil and cultural upheaval of late 1960s America. It was an adventure of the human mind and spirit that brought together diverse groups of school-aged children and presented them with the opportunity to engage their creative minds and explore the potentially transformative realms of Art, Music, Dance, Creative Writing, and Drama. Making this uniquely original program more laudable was its emphasis on character building through teamwork and creative decision-making. Thus, the program not only cultivated artistic achievement and appreciation, but enhanced self-esteem, setting students on their way to becoming successful, empathetic, and productive members of the world community.
The Documentary
The documentary is a mixture of interviews and archival footage that celebrate the experience, the values and legacy of The Living Arts Center, while encouraging the development of similar programs today. Interviews include past participants, teachers, administrators, and guest artists, to help illuminate the LAC experience. A few of our most illustrious alumni (stars of fashion, entertainment, academia, architecture, and other visual arts) discuss the influence their experiences within the walls of the converted Linden Avenue warehouse had on their lives and work. We delve into the motivations behind the federal funding that led to this innovative program and explore how the community-at-large reacted to those programs and we attempt to recreate, in an almost-immersive manner, that unique intersection in our history when the Space Age and the Age of Aquarius coexisted harmoniously, for a brief but glorious moment in time.
The documentary and accompanying educational materials will be made available to the public, educators,
arts enthusiasts and stakeholders to describe the program and encourage them to replicate the Living Arts Center
program for young people in their own communities.
